Valve State – 17 February 2019
5:30 – 9:30pm
Valve State is the brainchild of Lee Thomson, Jason Reolon and Richard Marshall, three of Cape Town’s most respected and dynamic musical minds. The combination of the DJ and jazz musician is refined in what is at once an engaging, sophisticated and extremely pleasant to listen to. Through a combination of effects, samplers, CDJ’s, laptop computers, keyboards and trumpet the trio have refined the art of blending live, improvised jazz with modern electronic music. As Valve State, the duo has performed countrywide and in a short space of time has garnered and impressive list of regular private clients including Johnny Walker, SAB, Top Billing and the King James Group. As far as the nightlife and festival circuit is concerned they are no stranger to the countries most esteemed festivals including Rocking the Daisies (four appearances), Synergy Live (three appearances), Wolfkop Weekender (three appearances) and Afrikaburn (three appearances). They have had the distinct honour of opening for English trip-hop super group Morcheeba, marking their first appearance on the esteemed stage in Kirstenbosch Gardens. In the private sector they have had an impressive run with some of the country’s and indeed planet’s most famous people in the privacy of their own homes including Dion Chang, Edith Venter, Alistair King, Lyndall & Jordy Smith and international stars such as Kylie Minogue and Claire Danes, both who made use of repeat bookings. In short Valve State stands as a benchmark against which all live musician and DJ duos can be compared, the level of experience accumulated by each member is unparalleled, and can be further explored in these short biographies:
A fixture on the Cape Town and South African circuit since the turn of the century, and one of South Africa’s hardest working DJs, it’s at clubs and festival across the country where Marshall can be found playing his signature sound of melodious, left-of-centre house and techno music, with a fair
margin for mash-ups on the side. On a yearly basis he can be found playing sets at the countries premier festivals including Rocking the Daisies, Earthdance, the Loeries, Kinky Disco and his own, co-founded boutique fest Wolfkop Weekender. Among the endless list of international DJ’s Marshall has played alongside are Seth Troxler, Henrik Schwarz, Âme, Dixon, Max Cooper, Richard Dormeister, Bruno Pronsato, Carl Craig, Tim Sweeny, Lemon Jelly, Metro Area and Tale of Us. He has enjoyed playing music across the USA, Canada and central and Western Europe.
Lee Thomson is one of Cape Towns most in demand musicians and has been associated with many of South Africa’s top acts. He is one half of the legendary horn section in SA’s longest standing punk rock band Hog Hoggidy Hog. He played with The Springbok Nude Girls for 3 years and has been a guest artist with Freshly Ground, Violent Femmes and The Rudimentals. He has also recorded with Goldfish, Mix n Blend, Nico Stojan and Closet Snare. Lee and his various projects have appeared at many major music festivals in SA and abroad including Oppikoppi, Rocking the Daisies, Up The Creek and The Cape Town Jazz Festival. In 2009 Lee was personally invited to play at the birthday party of local jazz stalwart Hugh Masekela, suitable homage to a committed career in the art of jazz. He is currently working on various projects that include Valve State, Hog Hoggidy Hog, Closet Snare, Restless Natives, Dave Ledbetter, The Collective Imagination and Lee Thomson Quintet.
